Gov. Strickland Issues Executive Order to create Health Advisory Board
By Sean McPhillips, CPHIMS, FHIMSS
On Monday, September 17, 2007, a landmark milestone of achievement in the advancement of Health Information Technology in the state of Ohio. Gov. Ted Strickland signed Executive Order 2007 - 30S to create a Health Information Partnership Advisory Board for the State of Ohio. This is the first of its kind in Ohio. On of the driving goals of this state advisory board is to reduce the growth in health care costs partly by improving the exchange of health information throughout the industry.

The Advisory Board will be lead by the state's Chief Information Officer, R. Steve Edmondson. Gov. Strickland will also appoint a co-chair. Additional board members will include two members from each the State House and State Senate. Other members will be appointed as needed.

The Order defines the mission of the Board as bringing together broad-based private and public sector representatives to formulate policies and programs that address health information technology issues in Ohio. The Order goes on to enumerate the role of the Board, which summarily provides a sense of state-wide strategic direction for Health Information Technology in Ohio. This includes operational planning, recommendations for privacy collaboration, developing a strategic roadmap of HIT, and advising the Governor's Office and Ohio General Assembly on Health Information Technology as needed.

The executive order will naturally expire on December 31, 2008, unless otherwise extended. All members of the Board will serve without compensation for their participation.

This bi-partisan issues is receiving positive accolades from Ohio House Speaker Jon Husted, R-Kettering. According to Karen Tabor, Husted's spokeswoman, the Speaker agrees in concept with Gov. Strickland on health care issues such as this one, as long as policies don't lead to a "one-size-fits-all" government-run universal health care system.
